2007 Summer Interns
(Multimedia)
Black College Wire and the Freedom Forum Diversity Institute initiated a program this spring to train 13 college students for summer internships in multimedia journalism. The program was designed to increase newsroom diversity and to provide intensive education and training in new media. The participants began the program on May 30 at the Diversity Institute at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. After spending 17 days at the Institute, the students will work as paid interns for six weeks at daily newspapers.
Michelle D. Anderson is a sophomore at Spelman College in Atlanta, where she is studying English and comparative women's studies. Anderson is a contributing writer for The Maroon Tiger student newspaper at Morehouse College, which is a part of the Atlanta University Center along with Spelman. She also served as a staff writer for the Spelman Student Government Association newsletter. In her spare time, she is a volunteer for Aid to Children of Imprisoned Mothers. She will be an intern at the South Bend (Ind.) Tribune this summer.
Drew Daniels is a senior mass communications major at Dillard University in New Orleans. He has been a writer and layout editor for the Courtbouillon student newspaper. He is a dean's list scholar, a University Ambassador and previously served as a residential assistant community leader and Sophomore Class treasurer. He will be an intern at the Noblesville (Ind.) Daily Times.
Calvin R. Davis is a junior journalism major at Purdue University Calumet in Hammond, Ind., where he is sports editor of The Chronicle student newspaper. He is also a sports correspondent for The Times newspaper in Muncie, Ind., and has been an intern for WGVE radio in Gary, Ind., and 100 Black Men of Atlanta, where he was a public relations assistant. He is active in the Black Student Union and coaches an elementary basketball team. He will be an intern at the South Bend (Ind.) Tribune this summer.
Shannon A. Epps is a sophomore journalism and communications major at Hampton University in Virginia. She is copy editor for the Hampton Script and a recipient of the Virginian Pilot Scholastic Achievement Award. She will be an intern at the Herald-Mail Co. in Hagerstown, Md.
Faith J. Hannah is a May 2007 honors graduate of Jackson State University in Mississippi, where she majored in mass communication and minored in vocal music. She completed the National Association of Black Journalists' broadcast short course and was an intern at WAPT-TV in Jackson. She also served as a staff writer for JSU�s campus paper, The Blue and White Flash, and a section of the Jacksonian Yearbook. She is a member of Zeta Phi Beta and church musician. She will intern this summer at the Montgomery (Ala.) Advertiser.
Jerome Hubbard is a senior at Grambling State University in Louisiana, where he is studying mass communication and sports management. He has been on the staff at GSU Television Center, the Gramblinite student newspaper, and Grambling Sports Radio Network. He will be an intern this summer at the South Bend (Ind.) Tribune.
Jackie "J.J." McCorvey Jr. is a senior at Tuskegee University, where he is an English major and managing editor of the Campus Digest newspaper. He previously served as arts and entertainment editor and has been a contributing writer to Mensfitness.com. He has a strong interest in music, including singing and playing instruments. He will be an intern this summer at the Montgomery (Ala.) Advertiser.
Keisha Ralliford is a junior at Hampton University in Virginia, where she is studying journalism and communications with a minor in sociology. She has been an editorial assistant to the editor and a staff writer for the Hampton Script student newspaper. She also serves as a campus senator for the Student Government Association. She will be an intern this summer at the South Bend (Ind.) Tribune.
Traver Riggins is a sophomore at Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she is a staff writer for The Hilltop student newspaper. She served as editor of her high school newspaper and won several awards at the state and local level, including "Journalist of the Year" in 2006. She will be an intern at the Montgomery (Ala.) Advertiser this summer.
Siraaj M. Sabree is a senior journalism major at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, where he has been a staff writer and editor of The Famuan student newspaper. He also has served as a reporter for Journey magazine and worked as an auditor. He will be an intern this summer at the Advocate- Messenger in Danville, Ky.
Catherine Sudue is a senior English major at Morgan State University in Baltimore, where she is campus life editor for the Spokesman student newspaper. She has worked as a summer counselor for a high school scholars program and a mentor in the Morgan State Upward Bound Program. She is active in the Liberian Association of Worcester and was chosen as Miss Massachusetts of Liberia in the USA for 2004-2005. She will be an intern this summer at the Herald-Mail Co. in Hagerstown, Md.
Natalie Wilson is a senior broadcast journalism and English major at Howard University in Washington, D.C. She has been a White House Correspondents' Association Scholar and announcer for WHUR radio. She also is a contributing writer for The Hilltop student newspaper and served as a reporter/producer for WHUT-TV. She will intern this summer at the Advocate-Messenger in Danville, Ky.
