![]() BCCA Contest Winners - 2002Alabama State University's student newspaper The Hornet Tribune won the top prize - Best Student Weekly Newspaper -- in the Black College Communication Association's annual competition for 2002. But North Carolina Central University�s The Campus Echo was honored in three other major categories -- as the top biweekly, as the top online newspaper and for the best news coverage. Florida A & M University�s newspaper, The Famuan, took second place in the competition for best weekly newspaper. Tennessee State University's newspaper The Meter was the runner-up as Best Biweekly Newspaper. And Southern University's The Southern Digest was the second-place finisher in the race for Best Online Newspaper. North Carolina A&T State University's The Register was the second-place finisher for Best News Coverage. The contest is open to student newspapers at historically black colleges and universities. It is sponsored by BCCA, the organization for journalism and communication faculty at black colleges and universities. The winners all will be honored at a ceremony to be held during the College Media Advisers/Associated Collegiate Press convention in Orlando, Fla., Friday, Nov. 1, 2002. Among the other winners, Howard University's The District Chronicles, a newspaper that focuses on life in Washington, D.C., and not just on the college's campus, was a big winner in news reporting. The District Chronicles took the top prize for Best In-Depth Story or Series as well as both the first and second place for Best News Story. Tennessee State�s The Meter was runner-up for Best In-Depth Story or Series. Awards also were given for sports and features reporting, for graphics, layout and photos and for commentary.
