Entertainer Steve Harvey and his wife, Mary, have contributed $40,000 to establish a book award program at Southern University. The Harveys have also pledged to donate at least $20,000 annually to support the book award program at the university.

The Steve and Mary Harvey Book Award Program will assist needy and academically deserving freshman students with the purchase of college textbooks. A typical Harvey book scholarship would be up to $400 per semester.

The Southern University Scholarship Committee will administer awards beginning in the fall.

"We are so grateful and absolutely elated about the Harveys contribution and commitment to Southern University," said Chancellor Edward R. Jackson. "The program is desperately needed because most of our students rely on financial assistance to cover some or all of their educational needs; yet there is no existing program at the University that covers just the cost of books."

In 2001, Harvey delivered the keynote address at Southerns spring commencement and was awarded an honorary doctorate degree.

Harvey is best known for his starring role in the television comedy "The Steve Harvey Show." Moviegoers may remember Harveys performance in "The Original Kings of Comedy," a tour documentary by filmmaker Spike Lee. Harvey appeared with fellow comedians Cedric "The Entertainer," D.L. Hughley and Bernie Mac. Harvey is also the host of a popular morning show on Los Angeles radio station KKBT.
