Letter to the Editor: Keep Eyes on the Prize

It is my humble yet steadfast opinion that Lincoln University should be most proud of its name ("Petition Urges Removing Lincoln's Name From University," Nov. 22) . Rather than spend any more energy questioning Lincoln and his character, it is my strongest hope that we can come together to debate the following questions for all who are reading this article:

"Where are our future African-American leaders coming from? Our scientists, doctors, astronauts, board chairmen, board chairwomen, cabinet members, nurses, teachers?" Through enlightenment and educational achievement, let us plant the seeds of success that are sure to blossom in full splendor.

I am awestruck by the realization that the enslavement of Africans ended on American soil in the 19th century; however, far too many of our brethren have not tasted the fruits of success that are attainable via the American dream in the 21st century. Categorically, I assure you it is time for all African-Americans to be proactive, in 2004 and beyond.

In the fullest tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Mother Hale, and Dr. Dorothy Height, let us band together with our eye on the prize for a brighter future.

Go, Lincoln!
